Brooklyn Children’s Museum, in collaboration with Haiti Cultural Exchange (HCX), is celebrating Haitian Heritage Month with Ti Atis, a family-focused cultural event on May 9.

The daylong Selebrasyon! celebration will feature Haitian dance, storytelling, arts workshops and food demonstrations designed to introduce children and families to Haitian culture through interactive activities.

Organizers said attendees can expect hands-on experiences inspired by Haiti’s artistic traditions, including printmaking, folkloric dance and storytelling rooted in Haitian culture.

“The Haitian Diaspora is an essential part of our Brooklyn community, and we’re honored to celebrate Haitian heritage with a day of creativity and connection,” Atiba T. Edwards, president and CEO of Brooklyn Children’s Museum, said.

Programs scheduled throughout the day include:

Taste of Haiti: Pikliz-making with Rogers Burgers

11-11:30 a.m. and 2:30-3 p.m.

Families will learn how to prepare pikliz, a spicy Haitian condiment made with pickled cabbage, carrots, onions and peppers. Participants will leave with a jar of pikliz and a recipe card.

Solèy prints with Nica Drice

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Artist Nica Drice will lead a cyanotype printmaking workshop where families can create sun-printed artwork inspired by Haitian culture using recycled and natural materials.

Stories and games with Justine A. P. Louis

1-2 p.m.

Author and educator Justine A. P. Louis of VivLiv Books will host interactive storytelling, games and crafts centered on Haitian and Caribbean traditions.

Mizik and dance with Robenson Mathurin

3-4 p.m.

Dancer and choreographer Robenson Mathurin will introduce families to Haitian folkloric dance through music, rhythm and movement while explaining the stories behind each dance.

The event begins at 11 a.m. at Brooklyn Children’s Museum in Crown Heights. General admission tickets cost $15 and include access to all programs. Admission is free for children younger than 1.

More information and tickets are available at the museum’s site: https://www.brooklynkids.org/programs/ti-atis-little-artists/.
