CAP-HAÏTIEN — During a calm conversation, two sisters suddenly smiled at each other as they enjoyed an orange and a squishy bowl of soup joumou (pumpkin soup) at Place d’Armes in Cap-Haïtien on Jan. 1. They kept digging into their bowls as they spoke. Around them, about a dozen other people were doing the same: sipping the cultural soup as they told stories.
They were calm, but it was easy to see the joy on their faces as they talked among themselves while sipping the soup. Residents were celebrating Haiti’s 222nd anniversary of independence, and, as a tradition, soup joumou was served.
The Haitian Movement for Haitians (MHAH), a group advocating for change in Haiti, provided the soup free of charge. Here are some images from MHAH’s soup joumou giveaway.
