Outfits made from recycled waste in epic Cap-Haïtien ‘Trashion Show’ | PHOTOS

CAP-HAÏTIEN — What was once trash — which Cap-Haïtien is often heavily criticized for — turned into fashion in front of the Notre-Dame Cathedral under the stars of a windy evening at the northern capital on Aug. 10.

Plastic bottle caps, typically found on the roads, formed the top of a little girl’s dress. The crowd cheered as the girl walked down the runway. The bottom of her dress was quite nostalgic, made from paper covers of elementary books like “Youpi! Je sais lire (Yay! I can read)” and “Wi mwen konn li (Yes I can read).” She wore shoes made from Lays chip bags. Local designer Daïka Maxime created the outfit.

The second edition of Trashion Show was truly outstanding, and it carried a powerful message. It urged the city to recycle and put effort into keeping the streets clean as it fights a serious trash problem.

“We can make money with them,” Junior Simpliste, one of the designers whose collection was on display, said as the show was in full swing.

“We can transform them. Let’s use trash to give the city of Cap-Haïtien another name. You can make clothes and sandals with what you’re throwing away.”

The fashion show featured four collections from four different designers: Maxime, Simpliste, Nehemie Fanette and Youseline Bell.

Poubèl Ayiti (Haiti Trash Can), an artistic environmental movement, collaborated with Family Art Agency, a fashion and dance group, to host the event. About 100 residents attended, and it served as the finale of Family Art Agency’s Okap a la Mode, a five-day downtown event featuring singing performances, fashion, and dance classes.

From dresses made of recycled plastic bags to elegant outfits, and from the red carpet that previewed the fashion event, here are some images of the Trashion Show.
