NEW YORK— Haitian writer Louis-Philippe Dalembert was awarded the 2025 Literary Prize from the Prince Pierre Foundation on Oct. 14 during a ceremony at the Opéra Garnier in Monte Carlo. The event was presided over by Princess Caroline, the Foundation’s president, and gathered creators across literature, contemporary art, philosophy, and music.

Dalembert’s award recognizes his contributions to francophone literature and his entire body of work — a rare honor in Haitian letters. He follows his 2021 win of the Goncourt of Belgium for Milwaukee Blues, a novel praised for its emotional depth and global perspective.

Born in December 1962, Dalembert is known for his novels, poetry, and essays written in French and Haitian Creole. His work often centers on exile, memory, and the circulation of voices across borders. Some of his books have been translated into multiple languages, expanding his reach beyond Haiti.

The Prince Pierre Foundation, founded in 1966 by Prince Rainier III in honor of his father, supports culture through awards in literature, art, music, and philosophy. Its Literary Prize, established in 1951, honors a French-speaking author for their lifetime achievement. Winners are selected without formal application, and the prize carries a 25,000 euro award.

Beyond literature, the 2025 prizes recognized artists in other fields:

  • Contemporary Art: Simone Fattal won for Sempre il mare, uomo libero, amerai!
  • Research Grant: Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme for Until We Became Fire and Fire Us
  • Discovery Grant (New Talent): Ruben Barrouk for his debut novel Tout le bruit du Guéliz
  • High School Students’ Choice: Damien Lecamp for Un père sur le banc
  • Music Awards: Mikel Iturregi won the Tremplin Musical, and Melinda Wagner received the Young Music Lovers’ Choice
  • Philosophy: Siri Hustvedt received the Principality Prize, co-awarded with Monaco’s philosophical gatherings
