Today in history: Jean-Jacques Dessalines is born

Jean-Jacques Dessalines, one of the central figures of the Haitian Revolution, was born on Sept. 20, 1758, on the Cormier plantation near Grande-Rivière-du-Nord. He was born into slavery in Saint-Domingue, then France’s wealthy Caribbean colony, where enslaved people made up the majority of the population.

Dessalines spent his early life working on a plantation. He later joined the uprising that began in 1791, as enslaved people across Saint-Domingue fought against the system of slavery and French colonial rule. His military abilities eventually brought him into the ranks of Toussaint Louverture’s forces.

Dessalines became one of Louverture’s most important military commanders. During the revolution, he fought against French, Spanish and British forces as control of Saint-Domingue shifted among competing powers. France abolished slavery in its colonies in 1794, and Dessalines continued to rise as a military leader.

The struggle changed course in 1802, when Napoleon Bonaparte sent French forces to reassert control over Saint-Domingue and restore slavery. Louverture was captured and deported to France, where he died in 1803. Dessalines then emerged as a leading figure in the fight against the French expedition.

Under Dessalines’ leadership, Haitian forces defeated the French army in late 1803. On Jan. 1, 1804, Dessalines declared Saint-Domingue independent and restored the Indigenous name Haiti to the country. Haiti became the second independent nation in the Americas and the first state to emerge from a successful revolution by enslaved people.

After independence, Dessalines became governor-general and later declared himself Emperor Jacques I. His rule lasted only two years. He was killed on Oct. 17, 1806, amid a political struggle over his leadership.

Dessalines remains a defining figure in Haitian history. His life,  from enslavement on a plantation to commanding the revolutionary army and declaring Haiti’s independence, is closely tied to the country’s founding and its struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

Today, Sept. 20 is observed in Haiti as Dessalines Day, marking the birth of the leader who played a decisive role in the final phase of the Haitian Revolution and the creation of an independent Haiti.
